The Role of Russian Army Cartographers during the Great Northern War – the Example of the Campaign of Grodno of 1706

This aim of this article is to analyse the role cartography in operation activities during Great Northern War. So far, only Swedish materials from that period have been studied, and work concerns two maps made for needs Russian army. Both relics were by general-engineer Joseph-Gaspar Lambert de Guerin (in Russian: Жозеф Гаспар Ламбер де Герен). They produced within first three months 1706 so-called Campaign Grodno. Cartographic show preliminary terrain survey engineers was already used army at time. In stage, officers developed marching routes Grodno Tykocin (only one such has preserved: Carte d’une partie la Lithuanie et Pologne ). At least four surveyed; places also found where Neman river could be crossed, as well fords bridges allowed cross over Biebrza river. Then, second whole had flee troops, all combined on map: Environs Ticochin . The text presents mistakes when producing map. Despite its imperfections, cartographic documentation contributed successful escape forces (22.03 / 2.04). After reaching Tykocin, Peter I’s troops successfully crossed Narew (29.03 9.04), then went toward Brest Litovsk (4/15.04). estimated average daily speed 18.9 km, but record days, managed walk almost 70 km.
